Chicago Board of Education Statement: ChiArts and EPIC Academy Charter High Schools

November 6, 2025

The Chicago Board of Education (Board) voted unanimously to establish the Chicago High School for the Performing Arts (ChiArts) as a District-managed fine and performing arts high school after winding down its current form. This will take effect in the 2026-2027 School Year. The Board also took the unanimous position that the District will keep exploring financial alternatives while conducting further public engagement in its continued efforts to preserve the conservatory model of ChiArts.

The Board also voted to provide $1.4 million for EPIC Academy Charter High School (EPIC Academy) to remain open through the end of this school year before winding down, ensuring that the school would not close mid-year. Recognizing the positive impact of keeping school communities together, the Board voted unanimously for the District to work with EPIC Academy students, families, and staff to develop a transition plan that maximizes stability and continuity.

The Board’s decisions on each charter school were grounded in one key commitment: ensuring that students, families, and staff at both EPIC Academy and ChiArts are positioned for continued success and stability. We appreciate the students, families, and stakeholders of EPIC Academy and ChiArts for their engagement and advocacy. Their voices are heard and will continue to be engaged.
